We’ve already seen a Notre Dame-Alabama title game once. It happened six years ago, and the results were not pretty.
The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 1 in the BCS, were throttled by No. 2 Alabama in Miami. The Crimson Tide scored the first 35 points of the game en route to a 42-14 win.
Could we have a rematch between the two storied programs this season? It is possible, as Alabama is currently the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff Rankings, while Notre Dame is fourth.
The Fighting Irish should move up to No. 3 when the new rankings are unveiled on Tuesday. If they finish in that spot and Alabama finishes at No. 1, the only way they could meet is if it was in the championship game.
If they do play, Alabama will be a major favorite, according to BetOnline. In fact, they would be favored by more than 20 points.
In fact, the Crimson Tide would be favored by a touchdown more against Notre Dame than they would against Michigan, and two touchdowns more than they would against Clemson.
Potential National Championship matchup spreads (@betonline_ag):
Alabama vs Clemson +8.5
Alabama vs Notre Dame +20.5
Alabama vs Michigan +14

When you compare this year’s edition of these two teams with the 2012 version, Notre Dame is better on both sides of the ball, but Alabama’s offense is the best its ever been and its defense is still stout.
A line of Alabama -20.5 seems fair based on what we’ve seen thus far, as it seems like no one can stem the Tide this year.
