Two blowout wins were enough for Vanderbilt football to garner a mention in the Amway Coaches Poll released Sunday.
Vanderbilt received three votes in the coaches poll, the equivalent of being in a tie for 44th with Memphis. It did not receive votes in the Associated Press Top 25. The Commodores are 2-0 after beating MTSU 35-7 and Nevada 41-10.
Vanderbilt will play at No. 8 Notre Dame (2-0) on Saturday (1:30 p.m., NBC). The Fighting Irish will be the highest ranked non-SEC team the Commodores have played since last facing Notre Dame, then No. 6, in 1996.
Five SEC teams are in the Top 25 – No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 7 Auburn, No. 13 LSU and No. 16 Mississippi State. Texas A&M, South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt also received votes.
The coaches poll is voted on by 65 head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason is not a voter. MTSU’s Rick Stockstill and Nevada’s Jay Norvell, the Commodores’ two opponents, are voters.
Top 25 votes bring bad memories
Vanderbilt beat reporter Adam Sparks and columnist Joe Rexrode break down the Commodores’ 41-10 win over Nevada and their upcoming trip to Notre Dame.

Creeping toward the Top 25 doesn’t bring up good memories for Vanderbilt. The last time it received votes in either the Associated Press poll or coaches poll was after a 3-0 start last season, including a win over No. 18 Kansas State.
At that time, Vanderbilt climbed as high as 27th with 92 votes in the coaches poll before losing 59-0 to No. 1 Alabama and not receiving votes the rest of the season.
Vanderbilt has not been ranked in either poll since the end of the 2013 season, the final year under coach James Franklin.
