The Tennessee Lady Vols will host the top-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish Thursday. Here is the preview for the women’s basketball Volunteers.
Suffering through a five-game losing streak, the Tennessee Lady Vols don’t have their road getting any easier. Holly Warlick’s team now has to play host to the No. 1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who come into the game with an 18-1 record.
Tennessee enters the game with a 12-6 record and a 1-5 record in the SEC. They most recently lost a close game to the Arkansas Razorbacks. So as they continue to struggle with morale, the No. 1 team in the nation is the last opponent they need to face.
Nonetheless, this is a historical rivalry in women’s basketball, and the Lady Vols have to play. It’s their second “We Back Pat” branded game of the week, which is a huge deal. Here is all the information you need for the game.
No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Tennessee Lady Volunteers
When: Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. E.T.
Where: Thompson-Boling Arena; Knoxville, Tenn.
Live Stream: WatchESPN
Despite their struggles, don’t count out the Tennessee Lady Vols in this game. There is precedent for them to be able to pull out a victory. Two years ago, they were unranked and upset the No. 6 ranked Irish in Knoxville.
On top of that, even this year, they have shown they can beat good teams. UT beat the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road earlier this year. So there’s no doubt they still have talent.
It’ll take another big performance from Evina Westbrook and at least two more players who can stretch the floor shooting from the outside. Warlick is going to have to be able to mix up her offense as well when Notre Dame throws defensive looks. Doing all of that in an up-tempo game gives them a chance, but it’s a small one.
