CLARKSBURG — Bridgeport’s Darian Spencer and Liberty’s Chance Howell both put up stellar performances in the early part of their respective sports. While Howell didn’t lead his team to victory, his individual performance was impressive while Spencer led the Indians to a dominant victory in the swimming pool.
For their efforts, Spencer and Howell have been named the BB&T/Exponent Telegram Athletes of the Week.
Spencer was a part four different victories, two individual and two relays, as she led the Indian swim team to a dominant victory at the 22nd Clarksburg Rotary Holiday Invitational swim meet at the Harrison County YMCA.
Spencer took home the individual titles in the 100m butterfly (1:26.4) and the 100m breastroke 1:17.91 and was also a part of the 200m medley and 200m freestyle relay teams that took first place as well. Her performance was just one of several impressive performances by a Bridgeport swimmer as the Indians took home first place with 513 points, almost more than the next four opponents combined.
Howell has quickly transferred his ability to score from the soccer field to the basketball court quite quickly, scoring 19 and 36 points in Liberty’s opening two games. In the Mountaineers’ 82-66 loss to North Marion, Howell outscored the Huskies 12-11 by himself in the opening four minutes of the game. His heroics weren’t enough to get the win but he proved he was the most dominant player on the court that night.
Both Spencer and Howell will be honored at the BB&T/Exponent Telegram Awards Banquet at the conclusion of the school year.
