One Thought For ND/Michigan: Football > Not Football Edition

One Thought … 2.0

We have made it to year two of One Thought (Hot/Cold Takes are Thursday now). First off, hello there! I’d like to kick things off by giving you an idea of what to expect on a weekly basis. The “Thought” each week features various topics about college football, focusing on a unique aspect of the game, the opponent, the atmosphere, and or other random related Notre Dame Fighting Irish topics. Last year we engaged in some great debates, and it was wonderful to see people vote, comment, and get in on the fun. This year is no different, and as always, vote, comment, and most of all … Happy Thinking.

Michigan/Football is Back Week

This week allows me to reflect on everything I have been able to accomplish over the last year, specifically during the period that left me feeling utterly incomplete: the offseason, or as I like to call it, ”Not Football.” Thinking back on everything I attempted (and sometimes mildly succeeded at), I realized something kind of scary. I am significantly more productive when football is not consuming my every waking thought … For a short period of time, my brain was taken to a horrifying place … Am I better during “Not Football”?

Not a shot, I love every second of the fall. However, I am curious to see how you as the readers feel about your productivity during “Not Football.”

With that out of the way, I want to reflect on some of the things college football fans around the country were able to accomplish during the period of “Not Football” this year. Some initial thoughts based on conversations and questions from some family and friends brought me to the following list. This is by no means exhaustive or ranked, but simply a first pass:

  • Get married (Personal accomplishment-Sup wife)
  • Work out
  • Retire (shout out Arnie Gough)
  • Experience the “carefree” lifestyle of the Europeans
  • Spend lovely afternoons with your family, without checking scores on your phone or looking at the TV
  • Finally call the old friends you’ve been meaning to “catch up with”
  • Experience the outdoors
  • When a crush asks you what you are doing on Saturday, confidently reply “no plans”
  • Volunteer in the community
  • Join a book club
  • Sign up for a meal delivery service to expand your cooking repertoire
  • Focus on grooming, with regular haircuts and showers
  • Invest in lawn care
  • Practice yoga
  • And many, many others

Your Turn

Please detail in the comments some of the things you were able to accomplish during this years period of, “Not Football.” This is in no way, shape, or form an exercise to tear you down, or make you feel guilty for abandoning responsibilities and or general social norms over the next 6 months. It is a simple acknowledgment that it is time put many of those to rest, for we have finally reached … “Football.”
