Morris, Fighting Irish win Ice Breaker title – Sports –

Cale Morris made 22 saves to lead Notre Dame past Providence in the battle of nationally ranked teams.

A night after allowing six goals to Mercyhurst, Notre Dame netminder Cale Morris’ 22-shot shutout led the second-ranked Fighting Irish to the Ice Breaker Tournament championship with a 3-0 win against No. 4 Providence on Saturday at Erie Insurance Arena.

The Fighting Irish (1-0-1) and Friars (2-1-0) played to a scoreless draw until Joe Wegwerth scored his second goal of the weekend with 2 minutes, 24 seconds left in the middle period to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. That was all the offensive support Morris needed, as he rebounded from an up-and-down outing in Friday’s win against Mercyhurst by posting his fifth career shutout. Notre Dame added third-period goals from Colin Theisen and Bobby Nardella. Hayden Hawkey, who shut out Miami in the Friars’ opening game, stopped 17-of-20 shots.

Andrew Peeke added two assists for the Fighting Irish, who captured the tournament title for the second time in five tries. They also won in 2012.
