Notre Dame’s 2019 recruiting class just added a lot of size, speed and power on the defensive side of the ball from one of Hawaii’s best.
Honolulu (Hawaii) Punahou three-star linebacker Marist Liufau has committed to Notre Dame.
The 6-3, 210-pounder was on campus in South Bend for the matchup between the Fighting Irish and Florida State on Saturday, Nov. 10 and it’s clear the trip couldn’t have gone better. This was Liufau’s second official visit this fall, as the first came back in October to Boise State.
Following the trip to campus, Liufau spoke with 247Sports analyst Blair Angulo for a complete recap regarding how things went during his first trip to South Bend.
“The Notre Dame visit was definitely something special,” Liufau told Angulo. “I can surely say that experiencing Notre Dame first-hand assured me that it lives up to its big name. The thing that stood out to me the most was the rich history that the University of Notre Dame holds. Coach Polian discussed everything with me and my family involving my scholarship offer. It really meant a lot to my parents and me to be able to be there.”
Liufau is one of the most talented prospects from Hawaii in the 2019 class and the state is loaded this cycle. Once recruited as a 175-pound cornerback by many schools, Liufau picked up offers from Notre Dame and USC as a linebacker after bulking up to around 210 pounds. His combination of speed, athleticism, position flexibility, and aggressiveness has him as one of the state’s most sought-after prospects. The relentless pursuit from special teams coordinator and area recruiter Brian Polian over the past few months, as well as the great effort on-campus from defensive coordinator Clark Lea this past weekend, played a huge role in the Fighting Irish obtaining Liufau’s commitment.
Liufau has picked up additional offers from Arizona, Hawaii, Oregon, San Diego State and Utah State. He was recently named to the Polynesian Bowl roster and will play in the game to wrap-up his senior season.
