This year, there appear to be six teams with legitimate shots at qualifying for the College Football Playoff. Most college football analysts believe that Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame are locks, and the last spot will come down to Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia.
FiveThirtyEight’s playoff predictor model, however, doesn’t seem to believe it’s that clear-cut. The model actually suggests that Notre Dame fans could have to sweat out Sunday’s selection show.
After all games were completed on Sunday, FiveThirtyEight’s model gave both Alabama and Clemson over 99% chance of getting in. Oklahoma is next-best, with a 72% chance.
Notre Dame, with a 12-0 record, has a 61% chance of getting in – Ohio State’s odds are at 66%.
It’s hard to see the committee leaving out an undefeated Notre Dame team, but who knows. It’d certainly be a statement about the idea of winning a conference.
In our College Football Playoff rankings prediction, we don’t think Notre Dame will be out. We have the Fighting Irish at No. 3.
The official rankings will come out at Noon ET on Sunday.
