Meanwhile on the Minnesota Duluth campus, a No. 1 flag will be raised in honor of the Bulldogs men’s hockey program, which is once again atop the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls following a sweep of the Irish over the weekend in South Bend, Ind.
The Bulldogs received 47 of 50 first-place votes in the USCHO poll and 33 of 34 first-place votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. In both they are followed by No. 2 St. Cloud State, No. 3 Providence, No. 4 Minnesota State-Mankato and No. 5 Notre Dame.
UMD’s 3-2 and 3-1 victories over previous No. 1 Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday at Compton Family Ice Arena extended the Bulldogs winning streak to six games. They’ve swept three-straight series — with two of the three coming on the road — to wrap up the first month of the 2018-19 season with a 6-1-1 mark.
The Bulldogs finished 2017-18 as the top team in the country following a victory over Notre Dame in the national championship. UMD was the preseason No. 1 in both national polls, but lost that distinction following a home tie and road loss to Minnesota on the opening week of the regular season.
Ohio State and the Irish have since occupied the top spot.
The Bulldogs are off this weekend — ensuring they’ll remain No. 1 for at least two weeks — before opening NCHC play against Colorado College Nov. 9-10 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
