Notre Dame is firmly in the mix for one of the top running backs in the class of 2020. On Tuesday, Mesquite (Texas) Poteet four-star running back Seth McGowan, ranked as the No. 10 player at his position in the country per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, narrowed his recruitment down to a select few and the Fighting Irish remain in contention.
The 5-11, 200-pounder, who has 30-plus offers, trimmed his list to Notre Dame, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M and USC. The country’s No. 109 overall recruit this cycle, McGowan will turn his attention to these eight programs, start taking visits and narrowing it down even further before making a final decision.
Early perception was that Stanford, due to its blend of academics and athletics, was the team to beat. Multiple 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions were in favor of the Cardinal, but it looks like they Pac-12 school has been eliminated from contention.
As a junior, McGowan carried the ball 222 times for 1,613 yards and 25 touchdowns. As a sophomore, he rushed for 1,020 yards and 14 scores on 151 yards.
Special teams coordinator Brian Polian, who has been recruiting the state of Texas extremely hard as of late, is currently the lead recruiter with McGowan at this point. Moving forward, don’t be surprised if new running backs coach Lance Taylor becomes the leader on this one, with guys like Polian and offensive coordinator Chip Long pitching in as well.
247Sports, in its standalone rankings, lists McGowan as the No. 220 overall player in the country, No. 20 running back in the nation and No. 29 prospect in Texas from the class of 2020.
