A report surfaced this morning, linking Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ job.
Kelly has long been linked to NFL head coaching openings. David Haugh of 670 The Score in Chicago reports that Kelly is on the Bucs’ “short list” of head coaching candidates.
It seems unlikely that Kelly would leave Notre Dame for Tampa Bay, but it’s not crazy to think that he’ll eventually depart for an NFL gig.
Who might Notre Dame target if Kelly does leave?
Dan Wolken of USA Today named some possible head coaching candidates this morning.
The “Tier A” candidates are huge names: Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops.
Just spitballing on a theoretical Notre Dame coaching search:
Tier A: Urban, Bob Stoops
Tier B: Matt Campbell, Matt Rhule, Mark Stoops, Jeff Brohm
Tier C: Dave Aranda, Pat Narduzzi, Luke Fickell

Meyer has been mentioned for the Notre Dame job a lot over the course of his career. Now that he’s retired from Ohio State, those mentions will only increase. Meyer says he believes he’s done coaching and his wife is hoping he’ll never coach again, but he’s only 54 years old.
Stoops, meanwhile, is just 58 years old and could be a great fit at Notre Dame with his Midwest roots.
Of course, this is all highly speculative (and premature), but a Notre Dame head coaching search would be fascinating to watch.
